The Difference Between Flax Seeds and Flax Seed Powder

One common question we hear from superfood shoppers is about the difference between flax seeds and flax seed powder. Which one should we purchase, and why? While both flax seeds and flax seed powder are great sources of Omega-3 fatty acids and provide benefits such as stabilizing energy levels and promoting healthy skin, you may find that one of these superfoods fits your dietary needs more than the other.

Essentially, flax seed powder is just that: powdered flax seeds. But surprisingly, these two extremely similar superfoods can affect people very differently. One of the biggest differences between flax seeds and flax seed powder is the way that their fiber reacts with our bodies. There are two different types of fiber: soluble and insoluble, both of which are very important to our health. Soluble fiber provides protection against heart disease and diabetes, while both soluble and insoluble fiber help us lose weight and maintain healthy bowel movements.

So, what’s the difference between flax seeds and flax seed powder when it comes to fiber? Flax seeds, because of their protective outer shells, provide our bodies only with insoluble fiber, while ground flax seeds (flax seed powder) allow our digestive tracts to absorb both types of fiber. Additionally, for those individuals who experience digestive issues, flax seed powder is much less likely to cause cramping, as it’s easier to digest. Therefore, our bodies actually get more nutritional value out of flax seed powder than unmilled flax seeds - and have an easier time doing so!

Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should no longer enjoy the delicious crunch of flax seeds. In fact, feel free to incorporate both of these superfoods into your diet - they’re both nothing but good for you! But while flax seeds are the ultimate smoothie bowl topping, some people find that it can be a bit harder for them to utilize flax seed powder. For that reason, we’ve rounded up a few recipes we love! Happy shopping (and cooking), superfoodies!
