The Top 3 Wellness Trends to Watch in 2018

The time has come to wave goodbye to 2017 and all of the health and wellness trends it brought us, while ringing in the new year by checking out some of the new trends coming our way. This past year, we paid close attention to self-care by embracing athleisure and plant proteins, and we’re super excited to discover all of the new ways we can show our minds and bodies some love in this new year. Check out the list below to discover the five new health and wellness trends taking the industry by storm in 2018:

1. Healing anti-inflammatory superfoods - From turmeric to moringa and beyond, we're seeing anti-inflammatory flavors everywhere and it's no coincidence. Turmeric, which comes from the Curcuma longa plant in India, has been the subject of what seems like millions of scientific studies this past year, and the results are overwhelming. Moringa, one of the most nutrient-rich plants ever studied has been used for healing since ancient times. While we don't recommend abandoning prescribed medications, it’s not a bad idea to speak to a doctor or nutritionist about how superfoods can support your health goals.

2. Low-FODMAP diets - Many people are referring to low-FODMAP diets as the new gluten-free, and especially for those suffering with irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, this diet trend is living up to its reputation. Basically, a low-FODMAP diet involves consuming foods that are low in certain types of carbs that are notorious for causing digestive issues such as bloating, pain, and diarrhea. While gut-health has always been a huge topic of discussion in the health and wellness industry, it’s possible that the low-FODMAP diet is the ultimate relief for individuals with recurrent digestive symptoms. The main foods to avoid are onion, garlic and wheat products, which means nutrient-dense superfoods like Cacao Powder and Sacha Inchi Protein Powder are fair game. Remember to check with a doctor or nutritionist before adopting any new diets.

3. Intermittent fasting - Let’s face it: every year brings along with it a new diet trend. Last year it was the ketogenic diet, which involves consuming very little carbs. This year, intermittent fasting is taking the industry by storm, and more and more people are choosing to eat in a manner more similar to our cavemen ancestors by inserting a 14-hour window between breakfast and dinner in order to slow the transport of glucose, allowing the glucose that has already been transported to convert more efficiently into energy. Studies show that people living with obesity and type 2 diabetes benefit greatly from this diet, and potential upsides include the prevention of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. However, it’s important to remember that intermittent fasting has nothing to do with food deprivation or weight loss - it focuses much more on fighting inflammation and increasing longevity than losing weight or cutting calories.

Get ready for some changes in 2018, Superfoodies, but don’t forget to keep up with the great health and wellness trends you adapted in 2017. New trends are always fun, but they’re most certainly not a reason to abandon something that’s working for you! That being said, regardless of how you stay well, we’re wishing you nothing but health and happiness in the new year. Here’s to 2018!
