Your metabolism is the rate at which your body burns off food, converts it into energy, and absorbs its nutrients. When your metabolism speeds up, you burn more calories at a resting state, and more calories burned = more weight lost!
So how do you go about boosting your metabolism? Below are simple steps you can take everyday:
1. Build muscle
Your body burns more calories maintaining muscle than it does maintaining fat. With this in mind, exercising becomes a no-brainer! Not only are you burning calories working out, but by building muscle, you can burn even more calories while taking that well-deserved break on the couch before bed. Basically, it’s a win-win for your body. Here are some great pre-workout snack ideas, or try adding a teaspoon of Maca Root Powder or Mixed Grass Juice Powder with a smoothie or water before hitting the gym to stimulate the metabolism.
Caffeine is a nervous system stimulant, meaning it tells the brain to burn fat cells quicker, specifically via the release of Epinephrine. While some may be sensitive to it, those who aren’t can increase their Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) by 3-11%! Caffeine doesn’t just come from coffee or tea. 3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 is a fatty acid that has tons of cardiovascular health benefits. But did you know it can also help you lose weight? Omega-3 can speed up your metabolism by supporting healthy levels of leptin, a hormone that regulates and maintains energy in your body. Plus, Omega-3 is super easy to get, especially by incorporating flax seed powder (which contains more Omega-3 fatty acids than fish oil) into your daily diet.
Your body uses more calories to digest protein than it does for most other food types. In fact, 25-30 calories out of every 100 ingested from proteins are directly utilized for digestion. Additionally protein blocks insulin surges, which induce fat storage. Therefore, by eating more protein you are in turn burning more fat! Plus, keep in mind that there are tons of ways to eat protein, whether you eat meat or prefer a vegan diet, including protein superfood powder, which can be added to all of your favorite meals.
5. Ditch the dieting
While it may seem counterintuitive to stop dieting when you’re trying to lose weight, it can actually be beneficial to your endeavors. When you stop eating as much as normal, your body recognizes this and slows down all other processes - including your metabolism - to accommodate. Plus, excessive dieting can slow down your long-term metabolic rate, so much so that as soon as you stop dieting you actually gain weight.
This isn’t to say you should stop dieting all-together. Of course, maintaining healthy eating habits and eating mindfully is extremely important. However, if you find yourself consistently eating less when you want to lose weight, pay mind to how it may affect your body in the long run.
Understanding how your body works is half the battle of loving it. So next time you find yourself tempted to start another crazy diet, consider boosting your metabolism instead, which you can easily do by adding superfoods to your daily routine.
